For example they worship the sun, the moon and planet veins which held different religious meanings and were related to their gods and geographical places.
Their temples and the gods associated with them were adopted from previous civilizations such as Tlaloc, Quetzalcoatl, and Tezcatlipoca. Some of the important Aztec gods were Tlaloc the god of rain, Huitzilopochtli the patron god of Mexica tribe, Quetzalcoatl the culture hero and god of civilization and order, and the Tezcatlipoca the god of destiny and fortune. These gods had their own temples with in the Aztec capital.
Religion was a part of all Aztec society and was controlled by the high priests of the main temples. Their ceremonies were monthly and a number of specific rituals centered on the ruler to stabilize political and cosmic systems. These rituals were the ones that involved sacrifice of humans. Throughout their society each level had their own rituals and gods and played their part in the larger rituals in the entire community.
The Aztecs had an unusual ritual and would impersonate their gods. Priest or other selected individuals would be dressed up in likeness of a specific god. The person that was put in charge of impersonating a god was called ixiptlatli and was adored as the actual manifestation of the god until the end when the god’s likeliness had to be killed in the sacrifice under great circumstance and festivities.
Their religion and their ceremonies were much more complicated than religions of today. They had many Gods and temples. They had many festival monuments and sculptures; they had many priests that would perform these festivals and religious ceremonies. They often gave or made offerings to their gods which ranged from blood to flowers. The Aztec society and religion evolved for hundreds of years. No one is exactly sure when the civilization ended but we are sure that is was a very complicated group of people.
